Join us for a sacred celebration of Lughnasadh, the ancient Irish festival marking the first harvest. Named for the god Lugh, this holy day also honors his foster mother Tailtiu, who gave her life clearing the land so it could be farmed, her sacrifice making the abundance of the harvest possible. We gather in gratitude for the fruits of the Earth and to remember the deep ancestral ties between labor, land, and life.
Here’s what to expect from this gathering:
Our potluck will take place inside in the Foyer. When planning your dishes – think grains, wheat, corn, and fresh berries!
Arrival Activities:
- Make corn dollies – A Lughnasadh tradition! We will have this craft available for all ages as folks are arriving.
- Sack Race – It is tradition to engage in games and races on Lughnasadh. The burlap bags also serve as a reminder of the first harvest. Open to anyone who wishes to participate.
Community Ceremony:
- Visual Storytelling – We will share the ancient story of Tailtiu, the foster mother of Lugh, whose sacrifice gave birth to the harvest and whose memory lives on in the heart of Lughnasadh.
- Bread Ritual – We will bless bread, a symbol of the first harvest and a time for gratitude – remembering that the wheat has died to nourish our bodies.
- Irish Circle Dance – In traditional Irish culture, circle dances were a way for communities to celebrate seasonal festivals together, weaving connection through movement, laughter, and shared steps.
- Guided Moving Meditation – Honor the first harvest through breath, movement, and joyful embodiment of the natural elements.
This event is open to individuals of all backgrounds and beliefs who wish to come together in reverence for nature and community. All ages welcome and wanted – bring the whole family!
