Rev. T. J. FitzGerald’s 2023 Summer Reading List
“
“I don’t know why, but land and landscapes have been on my mind lately. This summer, I’m traversing a few different kind of landscapes in my reading that draw from different parts of my life and interests.”
Rev. T. J. FitzGerald
Interplay of Things: Religion, Art, and Presence Together by Dr. Anthony Pinn
Dr. Pinn will be kicking off our Worth and Dignity Engagement (WADE) events on September 2. He’ll be drawing from this work for his talk at the church, so I’ll be getting into the book a lot this summer.
Our own Jo Guldi published this amazing history of land, rights to that land, and reasons people think they have the authority to exercise those rights. It draws from religion, history, and a range of other disciplines. My copy just arrived and I can’t wait to dig in in a few weeks.
America’s Classic Ballparks by James Buckley
A friend gifted me this book about baseball parks that no longer exist and some that do. Baseball is more than a pastime for me, though I don’t think it’s quite an obsession. This bit of nostalgia (and lots of pictures, phew), will be a great book to be with me on travels.
Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty
This collection of stories won the PEN Award for short story writing this year. The stories are about life in the Penobscot Indian Nation. One reviewer said, “Talty’s stories are made of fire and walk among us.” I was born on lands in Connecticut where the Penobscot Nation once stretched, and so I feel drawn to this collection.
