SUMMARY:Guest Minister: Aurora Levins Morales - Writer\, artist\, historian\, and activist
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special worship service at First Unitarian Church of Dallas\, where we are honored to welcome writer\, artist\, historian\, and activist Aurora Levins Morales as our guest minister. \nMusic by the Sanctuary Choir \nWorship at 9:30am and 11am CST in-person or online • 7:00pm ONLINE ONLY \nAbout Aurora Levins Morales \n\n\nAurora Levins Morales is a Puerto Rican author\, artist\, activist\, and historian. Her writing and activism persistently imagine a world in which the personal is understood as political and vice versa\, the complexities of identity and heritage are explored rather than erased\, and structures of oppression (racism\, classism\, sexism\, imperialism\, colonialism\, capitalism\, etc.) are recognized as interlocking\, such that they must be simultaneously challenged to be dismantled. Her contributions have been critical to third wave feminism and its evolution\, Puerto Rican and Latinx feminism\, disability justice\, radical Judaism\, climate change activism\, and grassroots organizing. \n\nWorld Premiere of ResurrectionIn honor of our guest\, we are excited to share the world premiere of Resurrection\, an inspiring new work by composer Nancy Galbraith\, based on a powerful poem by Aurora Levins Morales. We commissioned Nancy\, head of the Composition Department at Carnegie Mellon University\, to create this piece especially for our community. In addition to our choir\, she scored it for piano and string quartet.

SUMMARY:Faith = Trust | Rev. Ruth MacKenzie\, Guest Preacher
DESCRIPTION:First Unitarian Church of Dallas is pleased to welcome guest preacher Rev. Ruth MacKenzie. \nFaith = Trust \nWhat is faith in such times as these? Caught in the spin cycle of tortured truths\, and the siren call of influencers\, where do we put our trust? How do we ground our faith? This Sunday we explore faith\, stripped down and essential. \nMusic provided by the Sanctuary Choir.\nWorship at 9:30am and 11am CST in-person or online • 7:00pm ONLINE ONLY \n  \nAbout Rev. Ruth MacKenzie \nRev. Ruth served First Universalist Church of Minneapolis for ten years as Minister of Worship and Pastoral Care\, and received Minister Emerita designation upon her retirement in 2020. Having served as Minister in Residence at First Unitarian of Dallas in 2021/2022\, Ruth is happy to return in February to this congregation that she holds dear during Rev. Daniel’s sabbatical. \nRuth has continued her ministry as Adjunct Minister at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Rochester MN\, adjunct professor of worship at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and volunteers as a chaplain at Lino Lake prison of Minnesota. \nBorn and raised in Denver\, Colorado\, Ruth moved to Minnesota to pursue a singing career. She toured the country and began to write her own plays and music in her late thirties with much success\, produced by major theaters of the Twin CitIies. \nIn her late forties\, Ruth answered an insistent calling of a deeper spiritual life and ministry. She attended seminary and embarked on a new professional journey of discovery about how the arts and creativity can enliven the life of worship\, and the life of the spirit\, while bringing our imaginations and resolve to the work of racial justice\, and healing this broken and beautiful world. It is with much joy and anticipation that Ruth joins our community of faith.

DESCRIPTION:First Unitarian Church of Dallas is pleased to welcome guest preacher Rev. SUMMARY:Warmth of Community | Kindle the Spirit | Rev. Beth Dana
DESCRIPTION:The flaming chalice of Unitarian Universalism is a symbol of the warmth of community. We will explore our experiences of religious community and how this connection deepens our spiritual lives. \nThis sermon is part of our Kindle the Spirit series – A new year calls us to ignite our spiritual lives in impactful ways\, bringing the rich history and core principles of our faith into our daily lives. We begin by burning away that which no longer serves us\, then we find meaning and motivation in the symbolism of the chalice. Together we’ll ignite the light of truth\, build a fire of commitment\, and bask in the warmth of a community that fuels us to act with integrity as spiritual people. \nRev. Beth Dana is preaching. Music provided by Kindred Voices. Worship at 9:30am and 11am CST in-person or online • 7:00pm ONLINE ONLY

SUMMARY:Guest Minister: Rev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt\, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special worship service at First Unitarian Church of Dallas\, where we are honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Sofia Betancourt\, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association\, as our guest minister. \nmusic by the Sanctuary Choir \nWorship at 9:30am and 11am CST in-person or online • 7:00pm ONLINE ONLY \nAbout Rev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt \nThe Rev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt is the tenth president of the Unitarian Universalist Association. She was elected in June 2023. As president of the Association\, she is responsible for administering staff and programs that serve its more than 1\,000 member congregations. She also acts as principal spokesperson and minister-at-large for the UUA. \nRev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt’s twenty-year ministry has included serving as a parish minister\, seminary professor\, scholar and environmental ethicist\, and public theologian. Rooted in her lived identities as a queer\, multiracial\, AfroLatine first-generation daughter of immigrants from Chile and Panamá\, Rev. Dr. Betancourt has already helped Unitarian Universalism live further into its commitments to be a radically welcoming\, counter-oppressive\, pluralistic faith movement. In addition to her many years of service as Director of the UUA’s Office of Racial and Ethnic Concerns and on many denominational leadership bodies\, she also has previous experience with the role of president—in early 2017 she was appointed interim co-president to finish a vacated term\, making her the first woman to lead the Unitarian Universalist Association. She most recently served as Resident Scholar and Special Advisor on Justice and Equity at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. \nRev. Dr. Betancourt has contributed to the education of future faith leaders at Yale Divinity School\, Starr King School for the Ministry\, and Drew University Theological School\, teaching courses on topics such as ministerial leadership\, theologies\, womanism and Earth justice\, and combatting oppression. Her own scholarship focuses on environmental ethics of liberation in a womanist and Latina feminist frame. She holds Ph.D.\, M.A.\, and M.Phil. degrees in Religious Ethics and African American Studies from Yale University\, an M.Div. from Starr King School for the Ministry\, and a B.S. from Cornell University with a concentration in ethnobotany. Rev. Dr. Betancourt is the author of Ecowomanism at the Panamá Canal: Black Women\, Labor\, and Environmental Ethics (2022). She lives in the Washington\, DC\, area. \n
