Charles and Kathy Steele: Finding a Spiritual Home from Afar

From their home in Ohio, Chuck and Kathy Steele were searching for a church that reflected their evolving understanding of faith. Their former congregation no longer resonated, so they began exploring online. That search led them to First Unitarian Church of Dallas, where sermons on YouTube first caught their attention.

They were immediately drawn to the church’s welcoming spirit, uplifting music, and thoughtful messages that matched their own beliefs. “We found out our feelings were in line with each other completely and with the church,” Kathy says.

Even though they live hundreds of miles away, Chuck and Kathy participate in Sunday services virtually, sharing coffee at their kitchen table while they watch. They also travel to Dallas at least once a year to visit in person, building friendships and strengthening their bond with the congregation. “The people are welcoming—they don’t exclude anybody,” Chuck shares.

Content with the church’s online experience yet open to whatever new opportunities arise, Chuck and Kathy feel fully part of a spiritual community that spans distance and welcomes them as family.
