Prelude on “Slane” – Healey Willan

Grant Wareham, Organ

Call to Worship

*Hymn #273

Immortal, Invisible –

Words: Walter Chalmers Smith and 1 Timothy 1:17

Music: John Roberts

Immortal, invisible, God only wise.

In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,

most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to great and to small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
all laud we would render; oh, help us to see,
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.

*Affirmation

Love is the doctrine of our church;

The quest of truth is its sacrament,

And service is its prayer.

To dwell together in peace,

To seek knowledge in freedom,

To serve humanity in fellowship,

To the end that all souls shall grow

in harmony with the divine—

Thus do we covenant with each other.

*Doxology

From all that dwell below the skies

Let songs of faith and hope arise;

Let peace, goodwill on Earth be sung

Through every land, by every tongue.

Hymn #277 When We Wend Homeward –

Words: Psalm 126, Music: American folk Melody

When we wend homeward to our land,
like dreamers we shall be;
like leaping rivers in the spring
we’ll joyful be and free!

For though our sowing work is hard,
and tears do freely flow,
on harvest day we’ll shoulder sheaves,
our hearts will overflow!

Benediction

Music Notes

The tune “Slane” is an Irish folk tune, set in our hymnal to the text “Be Thou My Vision”. The earliest manuscripts of the text “Be Thou My Vision” date to the 8th century, as documented by historians like Máiri Ní Bhroin (1880-1931), or, Anglicized, Mary E. Byrne. Canadian-English composer Healey Willan (1880-1968) wrote the setting heard today.

“Brennan on the Moor” is an Irish air or lament. Historian Grattan Flood stated that it was “one of the most celebrated bagpipe tunes in 1770.” It appeared in a 1909 compilation curated by P.W. Joyce entitled Old Irish Folk Music and Songs.

“Down by the Salley Gardens” is an 1889 poem by William Butler Yeats. British Composer Benjamin Britten wrote the setting heard today.

Zachary Wadsworth (b. 1983) is an American-Canadian composer who has won international composition contests. Our postlude comes as the finale of seven variations on the tune “Land of Rest”, which is the tune of our closing hymn.
