sumfun 2009!
Unitarian Universalist Day Camp

July 20th – 24th    9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Response to this year’s sumfun! day camp has been tremendous. Registration for all ages is now closed. We cannot accommodate any more campers this year. All families who have registered should receive written confirmation soon if they haven’t already. Big thanks to all of the volunteers who make sumfun! possible.

at home at church

Five days of sumfun! provide a wonderful opportunity to have fun, make new friends and discover more about what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist.

know yoUUr stuff,  this year’s theme, is based on Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff, “afact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns.” You can view the 20 minute video, around which our week will revolve, by visiting http://www.thestoryofstuff.com.

Campers and Counselors will reach deeper into oUUr understanding of the interdependent web of life.  We’ll explore ways we can use resources creatively. We’ll have fun as we investigate how we can all be more environmentally responsible in our homes, here at church and in the larger community.

camp is . . .
..working to make a difference

Each day campers of all ages will bring donations of canned food and other non-perishable items to benefit North Dallas Shared Ministries.

On Friday, campers in 5th and 6th grades will deliver the collected items and work in the pantry filling orders for those in need.

Campers in 3rd & 4th grades will make sack lunches and distribute them at the Austin Street Centre in downtown Dallas.

..cookin’ up some fun

One day of the week each group of campers will work together in the kitchen to create tasty and nutritious buffet lunches to enjoy with their counselors.  Menus will include meals like a build your own taco buffet and everyone’s all-time favorite, spaghetti with meatballs. They might also be whipping up some delicious treats; ants on a log, edible dirt, and maybe even fish in the river! It’s enough to make your mouth water!

..letting creativity flow

All campers will pool their talents to create a work of art from objects commonly discarded in the trash.

This large, colorful and artistic creation will be displayed in the Religious Education building and enjoyed for years to come.   Revisiting this artwork will bring back treasured memories as campers grow and change.

..gettin’ out and about

On Wednesday, campers will go on a field trip to Greenstar Recycling Center where we’ll see what happens after the items we recycle at home and at church are picked up each week.  We’ll also have a picnic lunch at White Rock Lake with stops at the Celebration Tree Grove, which First Unitarian Church helped to start, and at the Adopt A Shoreline area which our church members help to maintain.

.. much, much more

  • There will be plenty of fun while splashing in age appropriate play-pools or swimming at the YMCA with fellow campers,
  • taking turns while conducting messy and fun science experiments,
  • plenty of time for play, plenty of time for song, plenty of time to just be a kid
  • and time to reflect on what it really means to have a friend and what it means to be one.

Application packets will be mailed to all eligible youth during the last week in March.  Junior Counselors are required to attend a special Saturday training on July 18th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  They’ll get to know each other, learn about their important roles and have a lot of fun!

ADULT VOLUNTEERS

sumfun! is possible thanks to committed adult volunteers who dedicate time, energy and heart to make the week a success.

Full-time volunteers may enroll their children five-years-of-age and younger in a special program.

Part-time volunteers may register their youngest children in the same program for the time period during which the parent will be present.  There will be no charge for these younger campers.
